OpenFreeMap
OpenFreeMap hosts the vector map tiles that every interactive map on West Loop Vibe uses. It is a free, public map-tile service built on OpenMapTiles and OpenStreetMap data. No API key required.
Where it appears
Every MapLibre map on the site loads tiles from OpenFreeMap:
- /map — the full interactive map of every business, park, and transit stop.
- Per-business mini-maps on each
/business/[slug]page. - Per-station mini-maps on /transit and the 10 CTA L station pages.
- The garages catalog map at /west-loop/garages.
- Sub-area maps on each
/streets/[slug]page.
Style and configuration
The site uses OpenFreeMap's positron style — a deliberately
desaturated base map that keeps West Loop Vibe's own pins, polygons, and
labels visible without competing for attention. The same style is used
across every map for visual consistency.
Licensing and attribution
OpenFreeMap is free for any use without an API key, but the underlying OpenStreetMap data is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL), which requires attribution. Every map on the site shows an attribution control crediting both OpenFreeMap and OpenStreetMap contributors. See /sources/openstreetmap for more on how OSM data feeds the site.
