Sub-areas

Sub-areas of the West Loop, Chicago

The West Loop is made up of 8 named sub-areas — dining corridors, historic districts, and informal neighborhoods within the broader neighborhood. Each has its own identity and history. Below is a guide to all 8.

Which sub-area for what

A fast orientation, west to east: Randolph Restaurant Row is the marquee dining strip — tasting menus, James Beard winners, and the biggest weekend crowds. Fulton Market, just north, layers rooftop bars and tech offices over the old meatpacking district. Greektown holds the Halsted corridor's decades-old Greek restaurants and late kitchens. Madison Row is the quieter everyday spine — brunch, groceries, salons. West Loop Gate and Riverside Plaza are the commuter east edge around Ogilvie and Union Station. The blocks near the United Center run on the game calendar, and Jackson & Van Buren is the residential south with permit parking and coffee stops. Each card below opens the full guide — history, picks, and quick facts.

What's where — by the numbers

Active businesses per sub-area, by friendly category. Each business is counted once, in its most-specific containing polygon. Drawn live from the City of Chicago license dataset; manufacturing, regulated-business, and other license-artifact categories are excluded.
