History

Jackson Boulevard and Van Buren Street were laid out as part of the original West Loop street grid south of Madison. For most of the 20th century the corridor was a mix of industrial and warehouse uses, with the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) cutting an east-west trench along the southern edge after its construction in the 1950s. The post-2000s loft-conversion wave that transformed Randolph and Fulton Market arrived more slowly here; today the corridor reads as the residential and everyday-services counterpart to the dining-focused blocks north of Madison.

Today

A typical block here has loft-converted residential above ground-floor childcare, vet, dental, or casual-restaurant use. The 1101 W Jackson Target store and adjacent CVS Pharmacy anchor everyday shopping. The West Loop YMCA Early Learning Demonstration Center on Van Buren, NewRoot Learning Institute, Brain Builders Academy on Sangamon, BrightPath West Loop on Racine, and Intercultural Montessori Language School on Racine cluster the corridor's childcare options. GoodVets West Loop on Jackson (founded 2019) is the marquee vet practice; Cameo Dental Specialists on Van Buren is the marquee dental.
