What is the West Loop known for?
The West Loop is best known for its restaurants. Randolph Restaurant Row runs roughly from Halsted west to Ogden along West Randolph Street, lined with Michelin-starred kitchens, James Beard finalists, and longstanding neighborhood favorites. The Fulton Market District grew out of the historic Fulton-Randolph Market — the city’s meat-packing area for more than a century — and was designated a Chicago Landmark District in 2015.
The neighborhood is also a major node in Chicago’s tech and creative industries, with corporate campuses for Google, McDonald’s, and others taking root in the 2010s along Randolph and Fulton. Harpo Studios, Oprah Winfrey’s production company, occupied a Washington Boulevard complex from 1990 to 2015; the buildings are now part of the McDonald’s global headquarters.
A long-standing art-gallery district runs along Peoria, Morgan, and Green Streets. Greektown on Halsted, immediately south of Madison, has anchored Greek-American restaurants and the National Hellenic Museum since the mid-20th century. Greektown staples include Athena, Lyra, Ithaki Estiatorio, Taverna 1821, and Greek Islands.
Retail in the West Loop grew up alongside the Fulton Market District's corporate buildup. Aesop opened its second Chicago store on Fulton Market in an interior designed by Frida Escobedo. Anthropologie occupies the landmark Howard Building on Randolph. FIGS opened its first Illinois store on West Randolph in early 2026. Brilliant Earth runs an engagement-ring showroom on Randolph; Holly Hunt operates a design house on West Adams; and Fox Bros Tailors has handled menswear since 1991 on West Roosevelt. The full retail list is on the best shopping page.
Beyond its restaurants and corporate campuses, the West Loop is home to a substantial cluster of nonprofits, foundations, and community organizations. The Haymarket Center on West Washington describes itself as the largest not-for-profit community-based adult substance-use treatment facility in Chicago. Special Olympics Illinois is headquartered on West Fulton Street. The YMCA Early Learning Demonstration Center anchors family programming on West Van Buren. Chicago Bulls Charities operates from the United Center side of the neighborhood. The Cara Program and Horizons for Youth run workforce and youth-development programs from West Loop offices. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Chicago Run also maintain administrative offices in the neighborhood. The full list is on the nonprofits and community organizations page.
