Is the West Loop safe?

The West Loop is generally considered a safe neighborhood for residents and visitors. It falls within Chicago Police District 12, which publishes monthly crime statistics, and trends have largely tracked the long-term decline of property and violent crime across the city’s downtown districts. Block Club Chicago covers neighborhood crime, transit, and development on a regular basis and is a good source for current conditions.

Every visitor’s judgment is their own — the safest approach is to check current local news (Block Club Chicago, Chicago Tribune) and the CPD’s public dashboards before a trip.

What is the West Loop known for?

The West Loop is best known for its restaurants. Randolph Restaurant Row, running roughly from Halsted west to Ogden along West Randolph Street, is one of the densest dining corridors in the United States. The Fulton Market District grew out of the historic Fulton-Randolph Market — the city’s meat-packing area for more than a century — and was designated a Chicago Landmark District in 2015.

The neighborhood is also a major node in Chicago’s tech and creative industries, with corporate campuses for Google, McDonald’s, and others taking root in the 2010s along Randolph and Fulton. Harpo Studios, Oprah Winfrey’s production company, occupied a Washington Boulevard complex from 1990 to 2015; the buildings are now part of the McDonald’s global headquarters.

A long-standing art-gallery district runs along Peoria, Morgan, and Green Streets. Greektown on Halsted, immediately south of Madison, has anchored Greek-American restaurants and the National Hellenic Museum since the mid-20th century.
