What it is

The United Center opened in 1994 as the joint home of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks, replacing the older Chicago Stadium on the same block. It hosts NBA and NHL home games, concerts (Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, U2, and most major touring acts), and family shows like Disney on Ice. The arena seats about 23,500 for basketball and 19,700 for hockey; on game nights its surrounding parking lots and event-day food trucks transform the block. The venue's own FAQ describes it as the largest arena in the United States. The block is also about to change: the parking lots around the arena are the site of the 1901 Project, a $7 billion redevelopment by the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families that broke ground on 3 June 2026. Its own published plans describe 55-plus acres, a 6,000-person music venue, 25 acres of parks and open space, and more than 1,000 transit-oriented affordable homes. Expect construction around the arena for years.

Getting there from the West Loop

Walking is the West Loop answer: the arena is about a mile west, roughly 20 minutes along Madison Street or Washington Boulevard. By bus, the CTA #20 Madison runs east–west along Madison directly past the arena between Austin Boulevard and Michigan Avenue, every day of the week, and it carries overnight Owl service — which matters when an event runs late. On event days the CTA also runs the #19 United Center Express, described on its own route page as serving "Bulls and Blackhawks games and selected events at United Center"; after an event, the CTA says #19 buses "operate every few minutes for up to one hour." By L, the closest station is Damen on the Green Line, about a third of a mile from the arena — it opened in summer 2024, so older advice still points at Ashland or Morgan. Rideshare works but surges on event nights, and the Madison and Washington drop-off zones clog about half an hour before tip-off. Driving is the hardest option: the arena's own lots fill early.

Why this page exists

If you're going to a Bulls or Blackhawks game, a concert, or any United Center event, the West Loop is the closest dense hotel-and-dinner cluster — far better positioned than the Loop proper for a walk-to-the-arena trip. Hyatt House Chicago West Loop / Fulton Market is the closest active West Loop hotel to the arena, at about a mile. Game-day eaters typically reserve a West Loop dinner spot, walk west to the arena, and rideshare back after.

Bars that run a shuttle to the arena

Three West Loop bars run their own shuttle to United Center events, which is the neighborhood's answer to event-night parking and rideshare surge. Terms come from each bar's own site or account and are dated; check before you rely on one, and note that a shuttle out is not always a shuttle back.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the United Center from the West Loop?
About 1 mile west of the heart of the West Loop — roughly a 20-minute walk via Madison Street or Washington Boulevard. From the Fulton Market hotels it's about a mile; from the Jefferson corridor hotels, closer to 1.6 miles.
Which West Loop hotel is closest to the United Center?
Hyatt House Chicago West Loop / Fulton Market, on North May Street, is the closest active West Loop hotel to the United Center, at about 1 mile away. From the Jefferson corridor hotels (Hampton Inn, Homewood Suites), the United Center is closer to 1.6 miles — better for visitors who want quick L access for the rest of the trip and don't mind a longer game-day rideshare. (Sonder, formerly the closest at 0.6 miles, closed permanently in November 2025.)
Where should I eat before a Bulls or Blackhawks game?
Bar Siena, Alla Vita, Parlor Pizza, and Green Street Local sit on or near the Randolph walking route to the arena — reserve in the neighborhood and walk west. The full Randolph Restaurant Row is within walking distance of UC and easier than trying to eat in the arena's immediate area. If you would rather not walk back, three West Loop bars run their own shuttle to the arena: Kaiser Tiger on Randolph, Ranalli's on Madison, and The Cross Roads on Madison. See the shuttle section above for each one's terms and the dates we checked them.
Where do I park for the United Center?
Official arena lots fill early on event nights and are priced dynamically, so no fixed rate can be quoted here. Many West Loop visitors park in the neighborhood and walk or take a bar shuttle instead. One concrete published option: Ranalli's points at the Block Y Garage at 1301 W Madison, across the street from the bar, at $5 for up to two hours and $8 for two to eight, reserved online in advance (checked 8 August 2026). Our parking guide has the wider picture, and our garage catalogue lists every commercial garage in the neighborhood. The Madison and Washington rideshare drop-off zones are typically congested 30 minutes before tip-off; budget extra time.
How do I get back to the West Loop after a game or a late concert?
Four options, in the order neighbors actually use them. Walk — Madison and Washington are the main routes back, about 20 minutes, and walking skips the post-event rideshare surge entirely. The CTA #20 Madison bus runs the same street and carries overnight Owl service, so it is still running after a late finish. On event days the CTA #19 United Center Express runs afterwards too — the CTA's own route page says buses "operate every few minutes for up to one hour" once an event ends. Damen on the Green Line is about a third of a mile from the arena. If you came on a bar shuttle, check whether it runs back: Kaiser Tiger's own page says its return shuttle covers Hawks and Bulls games but not concerts. As anywhere downtown-adjacent at night, every visitor's judgment is their own; for current neighborhood reporting, see Block Club Chicago.
What can I bring into the United Center?
Very little, and the limit is smaller than most arenas. The venue's own FAQ allows "a small purse or personal bag up to 10x6x2" and states that "no backpacks or other bags are allowed," with exceptions for required medical equipment. Bag-check lockers run by Binbox sit at the Uber Zone entrance near Madison and Wood, and the venue says those are the only approved storage for bags inside or outside the arena. Its prohibited list also covers outside food and drink, bottles and cans, umbrellas of any size, laptops and tablets, cameras with detachable lenses, GoPros and selfie sticks. All guests pass through metal detectors. Verified against the venue's FAQ on 8 August 2026 — policies change, so check before an event.
Do children and teenagers need their own ticket?
It depends on the event, and the venue's own FAQ is specific. For Bulls, Blackhawks and Feld Entertainment events, "children under 36″ do not need a ticket but must remain on the lap of an adult," one child per lap. For concerts the rule is different: "all guests, including children, are required to have a ticket to enter the arena." For college games and other events the venue asks you to call (312) 455-4500. The arena does not publish a minimum age for attending unaccompanied, so if that is your question, call the box office rather than trusting a forum answer. Verified 8 August 2026.
Can I pay cash at the United Center?
No. The venue's own FAQ states it is "a fully cashless arena" and accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and credit or debit cards for all food, beverage and merchandise. Verified 8 August 2026.
Can I get food and drinks brought to my seat?
On the club level, for games. The venue's own Lexus Club handbook lists "in-seat waiter and waitress service" among membership amenities and states it is "offered at Bulls and Blackhawks games only" — so not at concerts. The handbook stops there and never says what the service covers; from our own seats on that level, it is food, beverage and alcohol brought to you. That service belongs to the Lexus Club level (the 200 level), which is a paid membership rather than something an ordinary ticket includes. The same handbook notes the level's Stadium Club restaurant serves alcohol and that under-21s must be accompanied by an adult there. For ordinary seating the arena publishes no in-seat service policy at all — you order at the concourse stands, and the whole building is cashless. Handbook checked 8 August 2026; the detail about what the in-seat service covers is our own firsthand observation, not a published policy.
